This two-year AHRC-funded project develops an innovative approach to ancient sculpture by interpreting techniques through the lens of practical craft experience. It will build an online resource around a unique and unpublished photographic collection documenting the tools, techniques and working practices of Roman stone carvers. It goes beyond conventional archival projects by integrating an expert analytical commentary on the objects based upon applied knowledge of making and new synthetic studies responding to and expanding upon the data collected.
